VOICE 3 : JASON MULLINS

Updated: Dec 4, 2022

How did you get started playing and what can people expect from a Kolga show?

I started my first band as the lead vocalist when I was about 16 and a few years later a good friend (whom I would go on to form Spazm 151 with) encouraged me to pick up guitar.

I’ve always felt an affinity with the raw energy of punk and rock’n’roll and playing music has been a very natural outlet for me to create in. Kólga kinda came out of nowhere for me, but when I wrote the first song I knew it was something that I could channel a lot of different ideas into. It’s a mix of surf rock and black metal essentially as the rapid staccato picking is the same in both genres. I wanted to make it fun to dance to and weird to look at as we all wear different sea creature costumes with Hawaiian shirts. Kind of like Cthulhu meets Beach Blanket Bingo.

Influences?

I was really inspired by what Orransi Pazuzu were doing with black metal on their first album and wanted to combine that vibe with elements of Dick Dale, The Shadows and Goblin.

What are you listening to right now?

I’ve been listening to Satan’s Pilgrims - Psychsploitation.
