How did you get started and what should people expect out of a Kowboy dj set?
I got started DJing simply by being a music lover & record collector. I've been collecting for 16 years now. Sometime around 2015 I got burnt out from playing drums in bands, started listening to dance music heavily, and a natural progression to DJing happened.
As far as dance music goes, I'm not sure what one could expect, but it's usually early house and techno. Chicago and Detroit. I like it raw and dirty...my friend jokes that I play "punk house". Outside of dance music, I also enjoy DJing reggae, Tejano, country, post punk, etc. My taste is broad.
Influences?
I've been bangin' DJ Screw since I was a little kid thanks to my uncles, and he was really the first DJ that made me appreciate it as an art form. Forever an influence.
Tiago Varjao and DJ Lostcat, my two homies that got me into this dance music thing long ago. They both taught me that selection comes first. You could be the most technically skilled, but if your tracks suck then your DJing sucks.
What are you listening to right now?
Right now I've been reverting back to my old ways. I've been on a War kick lately, as well as a lot of guitar music in general. War's album Galaxy in particular is without a doubt in my top 10 albums of all time.
