How did you get started and what should people expect out of a KT Mills DJ set?
My partner Hampton first got me into it in 2014. He used to run a monthly called Mutant Wave and I started playing records there between live acts just for fun. I think my first "official" gig where my name was on the flyer was a Lou Rebecca and Jack Schrock show in 2017. Then High Mass was born in 2018 when Ponyboy and I met and had the same exact vision for a night, and now here we are approaching five years into it.
I have always played all-vinyl sets but otherwise hate to be boxed in and like to try to play all kinds of different genres. For High Mass I play mostly EBM and Industrial tracks, and for Crypt I play a lot of Dark Italo/Horror and John Carpenter-y type stuff, but I love everything from Synthpop to Garage Rock. I love to DJ one-offs with Gabe Mendoza because he's always down for literally anything. I'll ask him to play some totally random genre with me-"Hey Gabe, wanna do a Psych night?" and he'll say "Fuck yeah let's do it" and then bring the wildest shit on vinyl from like, Thailand. That's really inspiring to me and I hope to continue to get more and more versatile over time.
Influences?
Schwefelgelb and Phase Fatale have been my biggest influences from the start. I also love everything Maya Postepski touches. Chloe Lula has the best taste and the videos of her djing are so satisfying to watch. I recently saw Andi dj a set in Chicago that gave the space just the absolute coolest vibe-which is really the ultimate goal to me.
I've definitely been most influenced by friends who have played alongside me over the years. Hampton, Pony, and Gabe have really helped shape who I am creatively. I am forever in awe of Gavin Guthrie and Ricky Simpson for their mixing skills on vinyl. And Vectorvision always blows my mind every time I see him dj or play live. He really does it all, and flawlessly at that.
What are you listening to right now?
Spike Hellis on repeat...they actually just turned me on to club music, which I've been listening to obsessively. I also can't stop playing tracks from Chrome Corps and Visceral Anatomy, Sextile, Idles, Riki, Multiple Man, Im Kellar, Princess Century, and Hide are some favorites that I always return to.
